Our Cultural Doll program is one of our most endearing. Since 2021, we’ve donated over 700 new little friends to Aboriginal children in care in Western Australia.
Even though Aboriginal children in Western Australia represent about 3-4% of the population, they represent about 56% of all children in out of home care. For Care Bags, it was really important that we grew our initiative in a way that really acknowledges, respects and promotes the wellbeing of Aboriginal children in care.
The hope and aim of our cultural dolls is to provide some connection to country for an Aboriginal child receiving a Care Bag. We have an amazing group of sewers who create these dolls, with different shades of skin colour so an Aboriginal child can see themselves reflected in this cuddly new friend, that looks just like them!
$14 will cover materials to sew 1 doll and 2 sets of clothes. We provide the materials to our talented volunteer sewists who will work their magic to create these delightful little friends.
Sew a doll yourself and donate it to us!
If you like to sew, please reach out and we can provide a pattern and instructions.
We send our dolls off in drawstring cotton bags, with a change of clothes and a knitted blanket.
